천사 같은 얼굴
행6:7-15
헬라파 유대인들이 구제에 빠지는 일로 화목이 깨어짐을 보고 사도들은 즉시 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 칭찬 듣는 사람 일곱을 세웠는데, 그중에 활동이 두드러진 사람이 최초의 순교자 스데반과 빌립 집사입니다.
그들은 봉사의 직임을 맡고 또 복음을 증언하는 일에 앞장설 만큼 성령이 충만하였습니다. 스데반이 복음을 전한 일로 공회에 끌려가서 심문을 받게 되었는데 그의 얼굴은 천사의 얼굴같이 광채를 띠게 되었습니다. 이것은 스데반이 받은 영광이요 또 순교를 각오하고 복음을 증언하는 자들이 받을 영광입니다.
1. 점점 왕성해 가는 복음
"하나님의 말씀이 점점 왕성하여 예루살렘에 있는 제자의 수가 더 심히 많아지고 허다한 제사장의 무리도 이 도에 복종하니라"(7절).
모진 박해 속에서도 복음은 왕성하게 퍼져나갔습니다. 이것은 주님께서 말씀하신 겨자씨의 역사 곧 생명의 역사이기 때문입니다.
"우리가 하나님의 나라를 어떻게 비교하며 또 무슨 비유로 나타낼까 겨자씨 한 알과 같으니 땅에 심길 때에는 땅에 모든 씨보다 작은 것이로되 심긴 후에는 자라서 모든 풀보다 커지며 큰 가지를 내나니 공중의 새들이 그 그늘에 깃들일 만큼 되느니라"(막4:30-32).
구약 시대에는 이스라엘 백성들이 유일신 하나님을 섬기는 일로 인해 이방인들의 공격을 받았으나 이제는 사도와 전도자들이 유대인들에게 박해를 당하고 있습니다. 그런데 유대인들이 주장하는 대로 모세의 율법만 있고 복음이 없다면 어떻게 될까요? 율법으로는 의롭다 할 육체가 없으므로 모든 사람이 공의의 심판을 받게 될 것입니다.
이제는 우리가 기뻐할 것은 그리스도 안에서 불림을 받아 이방도 손님도 아닌 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이 되었기 때문입니다(엡2:19).
"하나님의 말씀이 점점 왕성하여" 무슨 말씀일까요? 이는 복음을 받은 성도들이 복음 사역에 충성하므로 열매가 풍성하다는 말씀입니다. 성도들은 직장에서나 병원에서나 어디서든지 주의 일을 해야 합니다. 사명을 저버리지 마십시오.
"허다한 제사장의 무리도 이 도에 복종하니라”
성령의 능력 앞에 제사장들이 엎드러졌습니다. 아직 그들이 공회 앞에서 영향력을 행사하기는 어렵다 할지라도 복음을 받아들였다는 것은 중요합니다. 여기에는 밤에 주님을 찾아온 니고데모, 또 사도들이 박해를 받을 때 변호하였던 가말리엘도 있습니다. 이렇게 복음의 역사는 성령 받은 성도들로 말미암아 왕성하게 퍼져나갔습니다. 이처럼 박해를 무릅쓰고 시련을 극복하고 줄기차게 뻗어나간 이 복음은 세계를 돌고 돌아 우리에게도 오게 된 것입니다.
주님이 오실 날이 가까이 오고 있습니다. 우리는 마지막까지 충성하여 하늘나라 확장에 앞장서는 성도들이 되어야 합니다.
2. 스데반을 통해 일어난 역사
주님의 은혜가 불필요하여 거절할 분은 없을 줄 압니다. 그렇다면 어떠한 사람을 주님께서 들어 쓰실까요? 복음에 충직한 사람입니다.
"스데반이 은혜와 권능이 충만하여 큰 기사와 표적을 민간에 행하니"(8절).
이것이 하나님의 능력으로 일어난 역사입니다. 우리는 이 은혜를 사모해야 합니다. 주님께서 들어 쓰시기 합당한 도구가 되어 하나님께 영광 돌리도록 하십시오. 나는 무익할지라도 하나님은 전능하십니다.
우리 교회 여전도사님과 성도들이 병원에 입원한 성도가 있어서 문병했을 때 마침 다른 병실에 있는 어린 환자가 있어 또 예배를 드리게 되었다고 합니다. 그런데 그분들이 울면서 병든 자식을 위해 매달리는 것을 보고 "우리 교회 목사님께서 기도하면 병든 자식이 고침을 받을 수 있습니다"라고 했더니 " 제발 목사님이 한 번만 와 달라"는 간곡한 부탁을 하더라는 것입니다.
하나님의 은혜가 얼마나 귀한지 보십시오. 병원의 의사는 약이 있어야 고칠 수 있습니다. 그러나 목사는 약이 없어도 고칠 수 있는데 그것은 하나님께서 역사하시기 때문입니다. 스데반을 능하게 하신 하나님께서 우리도 능하게, 강하게, 또 온전하게 하셔서 주님의 영광 드러나게 하실 줄 믿습니다.
3. 무익한 변론
"이른 바 자유민들 즉 구레네인, 알렉산드리아인, 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람들의 회당에서 어떤 자들이 일어나 스데반과 더불어 논쟁할새"(9절).
"공회 중에 앉은 사람들이 다 스데반을 주목하여 보니 그 얼굴이 천사의 얼굴과 같더라"(15절).
복음을 위한 변증은 불가피할지라도 끝없는 변론에 휘말리는 것은 삼가야 합니다. 순수한 마음으로 진리를 깨닫기 위해서라면 변론이 불가피하다 하지만 변론을 위한 변론은 무익한 것입니다. 모두가 자기 주관대로 고집을 부린다면 설득되지 않기 때문입니다. 또한 성령은 변론으로 받을 수 있는 것이 아닌 믿음의 선물입니다. 그러므로 변론은 삼가야 합니다.
"누구든지 다른 교훈을 하며 바른 말 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 말씀과 경건에 관한 교훈을 따르지 아니하면 그는 교만하여 아무것도 알지 못하고 변론과 언쟁을 좋아하는 자니 이로써 투기와 분쟁과 비방과 악한 생각이 나며 마음이 부패하여지고 진리를 잃어버려 경건을 이익의 방도로 생각하는 자들의 다툼이 일어나느니라"(딤전6:3-4).
"스데반이 지혜와 성령으로 말함을 그들이 능히 당하지 못하여"(10절).
그런데도 그들은 믿지 않았습니다. 놀라운 것은 스데반이 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 그들이 당하지 못할 진리를 선포하였으나 그들의 마음은 더 완악해져 갔다는 것입니다.
"사람들을 매수하여 말하게 하되 이 사람이 모세와 하나님을 모독하는 말하는 것을 우리가 들었노라 하게 하고 백성과 장로와 서기관들을 충동시켜 와서 잡아 가지고 공회에 이르러"(11-12절).
스데반은 더욱 담대하여 성령의 불검으로 책망하고 있습니다.
“목이 곧고 마음과 귀에 할례를 받지 못한 사람들아 너희도 너희 조상과 같이 항상 성령을 거스르는도다 너희 조상들이 선지자들 중의 누구를 박해하지 아니하였느냐 의인이 오시리라 예고한 자들을 그들이 죽였고 이제 너희는 그 의인을 잡아준 자요 살인한 자가 되나니 너희는 천사가 전한 율법을 받고도 지키지 아니하였도다”(행7:51-53).
스데반이 전한 복음의 핵심입니다. 참된 예배는 영과 진리에 있고, 모세의 율법이나 선지자의 예언은 오실 예수님에 대한 증언이라고 하였습니다. 그런데 그들의 귀는 열리지 않았습니다. 도리어 더 완악하게 되었습니다.
"거짓 증인들을 세우니 이르되 이 사람이 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말하기를 마지 아니하는도다 그의 말에 이 나사렛 예수가 이곳을 헐고 또 모세가 우리에게 전하여 준 규례를 고치겠다 함을 우리가 들었노라 하거늘"(13-14절).
여기서 진리와 비진리를 분별할 수 있어야 합니다. 거짓 증인들의 말이 사실이라 할지라도 진리는 세상 법정에서 밝혀질 수 없습니다. 그러므로 빌라도는 "진리가 무엇이냐" 하였습니다.
진리를 깨닫고 믿을 수 있도록 지각을 열어주신 하나님께 감사드리시기 소원합니다.
4. 광채 띤 얼굴
"공회 중에 앉은 사람들이 다 스데반을 주목하여 보니 그 얼굴이 천사의 얼굴과 같더라
"(15절).
원수 앞에 서 있는 스데반의 모습입니다. 그들은 지금 곧 돌을 들어 죽일 자들입니다. 마치 피에 굶주린 사자 같은 자들이라 하겠습니다. 그런데도 아랑곳하지 않고 얼굴이 빛날 수 있었던 것은 영광의 소망이 있었기 때문입니다.
그런데 원수들의 듣는 귀가 닫친 것같이, 눈이 어두워 스데반의 얼굴에서 발하는 광채를 보지 못했습니다. 살기가 등등한 그들의 눈에는 스데반이 죽어도 마땅할 반역자로 비쳤을 뿐입니다. 스데반의 영광이 얼마나 귀한지 아십니까? 이는 썩어지고 없어질 세상 영광과 비길 수 없는 하늘의 영광입니다. 그 영광을 누릴 자가 누구일까요?
1) 주를 앙망하는 자들입니다.
"그들이 주를 앙망하고 광채를 내었으니 그들의 얼굴은 부끄럽지 아니하리로다"(시34:5). 이것이 순교자들이 누리는 영광이요, 기도하는 사람이 누리는 영광이요, 주의 긍휼을 힘입은 사람이 누릴 영광입니다. 주의 은혜로 누리는 영광, 그 기쁨은 영원토록 시들지 않는 영광입니다. 이 영광이 우리 모두에게 충만하기를 소원합니다.
미국에서 내려오는 이야기입니다. 누구든지 남의 양을 도둑질하면 이마에 Sheep Thief(양도둑)이라는 머리자를 따서 S.T 라는 화인을 찍기로 하였는데, 결국 두 사람이 걸려들어 화인을 맞았습니다. 그중에 한 사람은 그 마을을 떠나 이사를 하고, 한 사람은 남아서 그때부터 궂은일, 좋은 일 가리지 않고 앞장을 서서 다 하므로 그 후로는 양을 잃는 일이 없어졌을 뿐 아니라 세대가 바뀌어 S.T 라는 의미를 알지 못하는 사람들은 화인 맞은 어른을 존중하여 Saint(성자)로 호칭을 하였다고 합니다.
2) 하늘나라 면류관을 기약 받은 사람입니다.
올림픽 경기에서 메달을 목에 걸 때 선수들은 감격에 벅차서 눈물을 보입니다. 하지만 표정은 어떻습니까? 모두가 기쁨이 넘치는 모습입니다.
"네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 관을 네게 주리라"(계2:10).
의의 면류관(딤후 4:8), 시들지 않는 면류관(벧전 5:4), 모두가 동일한 영광입니다.
"보라 하늘이 열리고 인자가 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보노라"(행7:56).
드디어 스데반은 영의 눈이 밝아져서 하늘의 영광을 바라볼 수 있었지만 원수들은 볼 수가 없었습니다. 원수 앞에서 천사와 같이 광채 띤 스데반의 모습, 얼마나 복되고 아름답습니까? 광채 띤 그 얼굴의 보십시오. 이 영광은 무덤에 있는 비석이 아닙니다.
성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람, 칭찬 듣는 사람, 주의 이름으로 복음을 전하다가 순교한 사람, 그의 생애는 모두가 보배로 충만하였고 진리를 위해서 목숨까지 버렸으니 얼마나 복된 사람입니까? 우리 모두 스데반과 같이 살고 또 주를 위해 목숨 바쳐 영원한 영광에 이르기를 기원합니다. - 아멘 -

Acts 6:7-15
When the Apostles saw that the reconciliation was broken by the Hellenistic Jews falling into almsgiving, the apostles immediately appointed seven men full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom to be praised.
They were filled with the Holy Spirit enough to take on the ministry and take the lead in witnessing the gospel. Stephen was taken to a council for preaching the gospel and was questioned, and his face shone like that of an angel. This is the glory that Stephen received, and it is the glory that those who are ready for martyrdom and bear witness to the gospel will receive it.
1. The growing gospel
“And the word of God continued to prosper, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased exceedingly, and a great multitude of priests obeyed this way” (verse 7).
Even in the midst of severe persecution, the gospel spread vigorously. Because this is the history of the mustard seed that the Lord spoke of, the history of life.
“How do we compare the kingdom of God, and with what parables do we use it to describe the kingdom of God? It is like a mustard seed. When sown in the ground, it is the smallest of all seeds in the earth, but after being sown, it grows and becomes greater than all grass and gives forth great branches. The birds of the air enough to dwell in its shadow” (Mark 4:30-32).
In the Old TestAment times, the Israelites were attacked by Gentiles because of their worship of the one God, but now the apostles and evangelists are being persecuted by the Jews. But what if there is only the Mosaic Law and there is no Gospel as the Jews claim? Since there is no body to justify by the law, all will be judged righteously.
Now we can rejoice because we have been called in Christ and are not Gentiles or guests, but fellow citizens with the saints, and belong to God's household (Ephesians 2:19).
What does "the word of God become more and more prosperous" mean? This means that the saints who have received the gospel are faithful to the gospel ministry, so the fruit is abundant. The saints must do the Lord's work, whether at work or in the hospital. Don't give up on your mission.
“A great company of priests also obeyed this way.”
The priests fell before the power of the Holy Spirit. It is important that they have embraced the gospel, even if it is difficult for them to exert influence before the council. These include Nicodemus, who came to the Lord at night, and Gamaliel, who defended the apostles when they were persecuted. In this way, the work of the gospel spread vigorously through the saints who received the Holy Spirit. In this way, despite persecution, overcoming trials and tribulations, this gospel, which has spread steadily, has come to us as well as it circles the world.
The day of the Lord's coming is near. We must be faithful to the end and become saints who take the lead in expanding the kingdom of heaven.
2. History through Stephen
I know that no one will reject the Lord's grace because it is unnecessary. So, what kind of person will the Lord use? He is faithful to the gospel.
“Stephen, full of grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people” (verse 8).
This is the history that happened by the power of God. We must yearn for this grace. Be an instrument worthy of the Lord's use, to glorify God. Even though I am useless, God is omnipotent.
It is said that when the female evangelist and the members of our church visited the hospital because there was a member who was hospitalized, there was a young patient in another room, so we started worship again. But when I saw them crying and clinging to their sick children, they said, "If the pastor of our church prays, the sick children can be healed."
See how precious God's grace is. Doctors in hospitals can only cure it with medicine. However, a pastor can heal without medicine because God works. I believe that the God who made Stephen strong will make us strong, strong, and perfect so that the glory of the Lord can be revealed.
3. Useless Arguments
“In the synagogue of the so-called free people, the Cyrenians, the Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia, some rose up and argued with Stephen” (verse 9).
“All those who sat in the council looked at Stephen, and behold, his face was like that of an angel” (verse 15).
Although apologetics for the sake of the gospel are inevitable, we must refrain from engaging in endless arguments. Arguing is inevitable to realize the truth with a pure heart, but pleading for the sake of argument is useless. Because if everyone insists on their own opinions, they will not be persuaded. Also, the Holy Spirit is a gift of faith, not something that can be received through pleadings. Therefore, arguing should be avoided.
“If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not follow sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine of godliness, he is arrogant and knows nothing, but loves arguing and strife. strife arises among those who become corrupt and lose the truth, who regard godliness as a means of gain” (1 Timothy 6:3-4).
“They were not able to understand that Stephen spoke in wisdom and in the Holy Spirit” (verse 10).
Yet they did not believe. The surprising thing is that Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, proclaimed the truth that they could not endure, but their hearts became more hardened.
“And they bribed men to speak, and we have heard this man speak blasphemy against Moses and God, and urged the people, the elders, and the scribes, to come and seize them and bring them to the council” (verses 11-12).
Stephen is more courageous and rebukes him with the sword of the Holy Spirit.
“You stiff-necked men and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you too, like your fathers, always resist the Holy Spirit. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the righteous, and now you They became arresters and murderers; you received the law that the angels preached, and you did not keep it” (Acts 7:51-53).
This is the core of the gospel preached by Stephen. True worship is in spirit and truth, and the law of Moses and the prophecies of the prophets are the testimony of the coming Jesus. But their ears were not opened. On the contrary, it has become more stubborn.
“And they set up false witnesses, saying, “This man does not hesitate to speak against this holy place and against the law. God” (verses 13-14).
You must be able to distinguish between truth and untruth here. Even if what false witnesses say is true, the truth cannot be revealed in worldly courts. So Pilate said, "What is truth?"
I want to thank God for opening our understanding so that we can realize and believe the truth.
4. A radiant face
“All those who sat in the council looked at Stephen, and behold, his face was like the face of an angel.
"(verse 15).
It is a picture of Stephen standing in front of the enemy. They are the ones who will soon be stoned to death. They are like bloodthirsty lions. Nevertheless, it was because there was the hope of glory that the face was able to shine without regard for it.
But as the ears of the enemies were closed, their eyes were so dark that they could not see the brilliance that emanated from Stephen's face. In their poor eyes, Stephen only looked like a traitor who deserved death. Do you know how precious Stephen's glory is? This is the glory of the world that is corrupted and perishable and the glory of heaven that cannot be compared. Who will receive that glory?
1) Those who wait for the Lord.
“They wait for the Lord and shine; their faces will not be ashamed” (Psalm 34:5). This is the glory enjoyed by the martyrs, the glory enjoyed by those who pray, and the glory enjoyed by those who receive the Lord's mercy. The glory enjoyed by the grace of the Lord, that joy is a glory that never fades away. May this glory fill all of us.
It's a story from America. If anyone steals someone else's sheep, they decided to take the head of Sheep Thief (sheep thief) and have them stamped S.T. Among them, one of them left the village and moved, and the other remained, and from then on, he took the lead and did everything regardless of bad or good. It is said that those who could not do it were called Saints in honor of the people who were wounded.
2) Those who have been promised the crown of the kingdom of heaven.
When medals are hung around their necks at the Olympic Games, athletes cry with emotion. But what about your expression? Everyone is full of joy.
“Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
The crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8) and the crown of unfading (1 Peter 5:4) are all the same glory.
“Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God” (Acts 7:56).
Finally, Stephen's spiritual eyes were opened and he could see the glory of heaven, but his enemies could not. How blessed and beautiful is the appearance of Stephen shining like an angel in front of his enemies? Look at that radiant face. This glory is not a headstone in a tomb.
Those who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, those who are praised, those who were martyred while preaching the gospel in the name of the Lord. His life was full of treasures and he laid down his life for the sake of the truth. How blessed are you? May we all live like Stephen and give our lives for the Lord to achieve eternal glory. - Amen -
