가말리엘의 변호

행5:33-42

 

"베드로와 사도들이 대답하여 이르되 사람보다 하나님께 순종하는 것이 마땅하니라 너희가 나무에 달아 죽인 예수를 우리 조상의 하나님이 살리시고 이스라엘에게 회개함과 죄 사함을 주시려고 그를 오른손으로 높이사 임금과 구주로 삼으셨느니라"(29-31절).

그때 그들은 크게 노하여 사도들을 없이하고자 하였습니다.

‘크게 노하여’라는 말은 스데반의 설교를 듣고 마음에 찔려 크게 분노할 때와 동일한 용어입니다(행7:54). 극히 강한 노를 표현한 것입니다. 아무리 흉악한 범죄자라 할지라도 태어날 때부터 완악한 마음을 품고 태어나는 것은 아닙니다. 사람들이 거친 세파에 시달려 살다 보니 그렇게 되는 것입니다. 그런데 더 악해지는 것은 종교적인 배경을 두고 있을 때입니다.

스데반을 돌로 쳐 죽이고, 야고보를 죽인 자들이 다른 사도들인들 죽이지 못할 이유가 있겠습니까? 유대인들이 이처럼 복음을 박해하게 된 이유는, 구원의 복음이 선포되는 것을 보고 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박았는데 이제는 그들의 소행이 이 진리의 원수요, 대적이 되었기 때문입니다. 그때 공회원 중에서 가말리엘이 사도들을 변호하고 그들의 분노를 진압하였습니다.

 

1. 덕망 높은 교법사

"바리새인 가말리엘은 교법사로 모든 백성에게 존경을 받는 자라 공회 중에 일어나 명하여 사도들을 잠깐 밖에 나가게 하고"(34절).

가말리엘은 당시 가장 특출한 인물 중의 하나로, 랍비 중에서도 선택된 7인에 들었던 사람입니다. 그는 공회에서도 유력한 지위에 있었습니다. 그 증거로는 그의 발언으로 공회의 분위기를 바꾸어 놓는 것을 보아서도 알 수가 있습니다.

또한 그는 율법의 전통을 엄수하였고, 율법에 대한 해박한 지식에도 비교할 자가 없어 '율법의 영광'이란 별명까지 붙었다고 합니다. 바울도 가말리엘의 문하생이 된 것을 자랑스럽게 생각하였습니다. 가말리엘은 매사에 신중했던 사람으로 격한 감정에 따라 처리하지 않고 이성의 판단을 기대했습니다.

"이스라엘 사람들아 너희가 이 사람들에게 대하여 어떻게 하려는지 조심하라"(35절).

인간의 실수는 있을 수 있습니다. 그러므로 항상 조심해야 합니다.

유대인들을 보십시오. 사실 그들은 정치적인 문제보다도 종교적인 문제가 더 중요했습니다. 왜냐하면 유대인의 역사는 하나님 중심이었기 때문입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 기뻐하는 일을 할 때는 정치, 경제, 문화 모든 분야에서 열국 중에 제사장 민족으로 꽃을 피웠으나 우상을 섬기고 죄에 빠질 때는 심판을 받았던 것입니다. 그러므로 그들의 당면한 문제 중에서 가장 중요한 것은 로마에 빼앗긴 주권을 회복하는 일보다 하나님께 바로 서는 일이었습니다.

가말리엘은 지덕을 겸비한 인격자로 "백성에게 존경을 받는 자라" 하였습니다. 물론 그때 그가 개종하여 사도들을 변호한 것이라 보기는 어렵습니다. 그러나 그의 말 한마디로 사도들을 해치려는 유대인들의 분노를 잠재울 수 있었습니다. 전설에 의하면 가말리엘이 말년에 기독교로 개종했다고 합니다. 우리도 매사에 덕을 쌓아 하나님께 영광 돌리는 성도들이 되어야 하겠습니다.

 

2. 가말리엘의 변호

가말리엘은 자신의 논리를 피력하기 위해 두 가지 전례를 들고 있습니다.

1) 드다의 사건

"이전에 드다가 일어나 스스로 선전하매 사람이 약 사백 명이나 따르더니 그가 죽임을 당하매 따르던 모든 사람들이 흩어져 없어졌고"(36절).

요세프스에 의하면 "드다는 자칭 선지자라 하고 요단강 가에서 백성들을 모아 자기가 명령을 하면 요단강이 갈라지고 여호수아 때처럼 마른 땅으로 건널 수 있다고 선동하다가 로마 총독 파두스가 기마병을 보내어 일당을 진멸하고 드다는 목 베임을 당했다"고 합니다.

2) 유다의 사건

"그 후 호적할 때에 갈릴리 유다가 일어나 백성을 꾀어 따르게 하다가 그도 망한즉 따르던 모든 사람들이 흩어졌느니라"(37절).

이 사람은 '가말라 유다'라고도 하고 '갈릴리 유다'로도 불리었다고도 합니다. 그는 수리아의 총독 퀴리니우스 때 하나님의 백성은 오로지 여호와에게만 제물을 바치고 이방의 통치자에게는 납세할 수 없다고 반항을 하다가 죽었다고 합니다.

그동안 잘못된 이단으로 유혹하는 자들이 우리나라에도 많이 있습니다. 그러나 진리와 비진리는 시간이라는 시금석이 밝혀줍니다. 기억하십시오. 비진리에 빠져들면 생명을 잃게 됩니다.

3) 사람이 대적할 수 없는 일

이것을 깨닫는 것이 중요합니다. 과학 문명이 극도로 발달한 오늘 세상 돌아가는 것을 보면서 앞으로 이천 년대는 과연 지구가 어떻게 변할까 궁금해지기도 합니다. 그러나 분명한 것은 과학이 아무리 발달하고 살기 좋은 세상이 된다 할지라도 생명의 주인 되시는 하나님께서 내 생명을 찾으시면 그 순간 모든 것은 끝난다는 사실입니다.

하나님의 뜻을 바로 깨닫고 그 뜻에 순종함이 내게 복이요, 구원이요, 또한 지혜입니다. 바울이 아그립바 왕 앞에서 자신이 개종한 사유를 변명한 간증입니다.

"왕이여 정오가 되어 길에서 보니 하늘로부터 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 나와 내 동행들을 둘러 비추는지라 우리가 다 땅에 엎드러지매 내가 소리를 들으니 히브리 말로 이르되 사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐 가시 채를 뒷발질하기가 네게 고생이니라"(행26:13-14).

하나님의 하시는 일을 인간이 막을 수 없습니다. 그런데도 고집을 부린다면 고통이 더할 뿐입니다. 교법사 가말리엘의 지혜를 보십시오.

"이제 내가 너희에게 말하노니 이 사람들을 상관하지 말고 버려두라 이 사상과 이 소행이 사람으로부터 났으면 무너질 것이요 만일 하나님께로부터 났으면 너희가 그들을 무너뜨릴 수 없겠고 도리어 하나님을 대적하는 자가 될까 하노라"(38-39).

감히 인간이 어떻게 하나님의 일을 무너뜨릴 수 있겠으며, 인간이 어떻게 하나님을 대적할 수 있겠습니까? 그것은 자멸이요 심판입니다.

“어찌하여 이방 나라들이 분노하며 민족들이 헛된 일을 꾸미는가 세상의 군왕들이 나서며 관원들이 서로 꾀하여 여호와와 그의 기름부음 받은 자를 대적하며 우리가 그들의 맨 것을 끊고 그의 결박을 벗어버리자 하는도다 하늘에 계신 이가 웃으심이여 주께서 그들을 비웃으시리로다”(시2:1-4).

 

3. 주의 이름으로 받는 고난을 기뻐한 제자들

"그들이 옳게 여겨 사도들을 불러들여 채찍질하며 예수의 이름으로 말하는 것을 금하고 놓으니 사도들은 그 이름을 위하여 능욕 받는 일에 합당한 자로 여기심을 기뻐하면서 공회 앞을 떠나니라"(40-41절).

시험을 이기는 비결이 여기에 있습니다. 매를 맞으면서도 사도들은 기뻐하였습니다. 사도들도 육신을 가진 사람이 매를 맞으면서도 기뻐하였다면 그것이 하나님의 은혜입니다.

"그리스도께서 이미 육체의 고난을 받으셨으니 너희도 같은 마음으로 갑옷을 삼으라"(벧전 4:1).

믿음의 갑옷으로 무장하십시오. 이 갑옷은 나를 안전하게 지켜주는 방패가 될 줄을 믿습니다. 또한 사도들이 기뻐하였던 것은 하늘나라 소망이 있었기 때문입니다. 천국에 예비 되어 있는 의의 면류관, 생명의 면류관은 누구에게 기약된 것일까요? 주님의 이름으로 고난받은 성도들에게 입니다.

"나로 말미암아 너희를 욕하고 박해하고 거짓으로 너희를 거슬러 모든 악한 말을 할 때에는 너희에게 복이 있나니 기뻐하고 즐거워하라 하늘에서 너희의 상이 큼이라 너희 전에 있던 선지자들도 이같이 박해하였느니라"(마5:11-12).

 

4. 더욱 불타는 복음의 열기

복음은 요원의 불길같이 박해 속에서 싹이 나고, 성장하고, 또 줄기차게 뻗어나가 오늘에 와서는 세계적으로 가장 많은 신자와 광활한 지역을 차지하게 되었습니다. 물론 오늘도 회교권과 일부 공산권에서 공식적으로는 복음 사역을 허용하지 않고 있으나 지구상의 대부분 나라들이 종교 자유와 선교 활동의 자유를 보장하고 있습니다.

그런데 주의해야 할 것은 세속화 현상입니다. 에덴동산에서 뱀의 유혹으로 선악과를 먹었고, 로마가 기독교를 국교로 선포한 후 영력을 상실하고 세속화되었던 것같이, 오늘도 이런 현상들은 마찬가지입니다. 신앙이 타성에 빠져들지 않도록 주의하십시오. 날마다 자신을 쳐서 복종시킨 바울과 같이 우리도 자신을 다스리기에 게으르지 않아야 합니다. 일평생 바울을 깨어 있게 한 요소가 무엇인지 아십니까? 외부적으로는 박해요, 내부적으로는 찌르는 가시였습니다. 그러나 주님의 은혜는 이를 극복하기에 넉넉하였습니다.

"그들이 날마다 성전에 있든지 집에 있든지 예수는 그리스도라고 가르치기와 전도하기를 그치지 아니하니라"(42절).

이 큰 은혜와 축복이 우리 모두에게 충만하기를 기원합니다. - 아멘 -

 

 

Gamaliel's defense

Acts 5:33-42

 

"Peter and the apostles answered and said, "It is more appropriate to obey God than to men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging on a tree, and exalted him with his right hand, in order to give Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins, as king and Savior. made him a ' (verses 29-31).

Then they were very angry and wanted to get rid of the apostles.

The word ‘great anger’ is the same term as when hearing Stephen’s sermon and being pierced in his heart and greatly angry (Acts 7:54). It is an expression of extremely strong oars. Even the most heinous criminals are not born with a hard heart. This is because people are living in a harsh sepa. But it gets even worse when you have a religious background.

Is there any reason why those who stoned Stephen and killed James couldn't kill the other apostles? The reason the Jews persecuted the gospel was because they saw the gospel of salvation being proclaimed and crucified Christ, but now their actions have become enemies and enemies of this truth. Then Gamaliel from the council defended the apostles and suppressed their wrath.

 

1. A virtuous teacher

“Gamaliel the Pharisee was a teacher and was respected by all the people, and he rose from the council and commanded the apostles to go out for a little while” (verse 34).

Gamaliel was one of the most outstanding figures of his time, and one of the seven chosen among the rabbis. He also held a prominent position in the council. Evidence of this can be seen in the way he changed the atmosphere of the council with his remarks.

In addition, he adhered to the tradition of the law, and there was no one to compare his extensive knowledge of the law, so he was even nicknamed 'the glory of the law'. Paul was also proud to be a student of Gamaliel. Gamaliel was a prudent man in everything he did, and he expected the judgment of the opposite sex to not deal with his intense feelings.

“Men of Israel, be careful what you do to these people” (verse 35).

Human error may exist. Therefore, you should always be careful.

Look at the Jews. In fact, religious issues were more important to them than political issues. Because Jewish history was God-centered. Therefore, when doing things that please God, they blossomed as a priestly nation among the nations in all fields of politics, economy, and culture, but when they worshiped idols and fell into sin, they were judged. Therefore, the most important of their immediate problems was to stand upright with God rather than to restore the sovereignty lost to Rome.

Gamaliel was described as "a man who was respected by the people" as a person with virtuosity. Of course, it is difficult to say that he was converted at that time and defended the apostles. But his words could calm the wrath of the Jews who wanted to harm the apostles. Legend has it that Gamaliel converted to Christianity in his later years. We too should become saints who glorify God by accumulating virtue in everything.

 

2. Gamaliel's Defense

Gamaliel cites two precedents to state his own logic.

1) Deda's case

“Tedah got up and propagated himself before, and about four hundred men followed him, and when he was put to death, all those who followed him were scattered and disappeared” (verse 36).

According to Josephus, "Deda calls himself a prophet and gathers people along the Jordan River and instigates that the Jordan River will split and cross on dry land just as in the days of Joshua. Everyone was beheaded.”

2) The case of Judah

“After that, Judah of Galilee rose up during the registration process, and seduced the people to follow him; but he also fell, and all those who followed him were scattered” (verse 37).

It is said that this man was also called 'Judah Gamalah' and 'Judah of Galilee'. He is said to have died while rebelling against the fact that God's people could only offer sacrifices to the Lord and pay taxes to foreign rulers during the time of Quirinius, governor of Syria.

In the meantime, there are many people in our country who are tempting you with false heresy. But truth and untruth are revealed by the touchstone of time. Remember. If you fall into untruth, you will lose your life.

3) What no man can resist

It is important to realize this. Watching the world go around today, where scientific civilization is extremely developed, one wonders how the earth will change in the next two thousand years. However, what is clear is that no matter how advanced science may make the world a better place to live in, if God, the owner of life, finds my life, everything will be over at that moment.

Understanding God's will and obeying it is a blessing, salvation, and wisdom for me. This is the testimony of Paul's excuse for his conversion before King Agrippa.

"O king, at noon on the road, I saw a light brighter than the sun from heaven shining around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice, saying in Hebrew, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick back” (Acts 26:13-14).

Man cannot stop what God is doing. Still, persisting will only add to the pain. Look at the wisdom of the teacher Gamaliel.

“Now I tell you, do not care about these people and leave them alone. If these thoughts and actions are of man, they will fall down; if they are of God, you will not be able to overthrow them, but rather become enemies of God.” 38-39).

How dare humans destroy the work of God, and how can humans resist God? It is self-destruction and judgment.

“Why do the nations rage, and the nations plot in vain? The princes of the earth go forth, and the rulers conspire against the LORD and his anointed, that we should cut off their ties and take off his bonds. Sim, the Lord will ridicule them” (Psalm 2:1-4).

 

3. The disciples who rejoiced in suffering in the name of the Lord

“When they saw it right, they called the apostles and flogged them, and forbade them to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go, and the apostles left the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy of reproach for his name” (verses 40-41).

Here's the secret to winning the exam. Even though they were beaten, the apostles rejoiced. If the apostles rejoiced even though they were being beaten, that is the grace of God.

“Because Christ already suffered in the flesh, in the same spirit put on your armor” (1 Peter 4:1).

Arm yourself with the armor of faith. I believe this armor will be a shield that keeps me safe. Also, the reason the apostles rejoiced was because they had the hope of the kingdom of heaven. Who is promised the crown of righteousness and the crown of life in heaven? To the saints who have suffered in the name of the Lord.

“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matt. 5:11-12).

 

4. The burning heat of the gospel

The gospel sprouted, grew, and spread out in the midst of persecution like the flames of an agent, and today it has come to occupy the largest number of believers in the world and a vast area. Of course, even today, the Muslim and some communist countries do not officially allow the ministry of the gospel, but most countries on the planet guarantee freedom of religion and freedom of missionary activity.

However, one thing to watch out for is secularization. Just as in the Garden of Eden, they ate the forbidden fruit by the temptation of the serpent, and lost their spiritual power and became secular after Rome proclaimed Christianity as the state religion, these phenomena are the same today. Be careful not to let your faith fall into inertia. Like Paul, who beat himself up daily and made him submissive, we should not be lazy in governing ourselves. Do you know what kept Paul awake all his life? Externally it was a persecution, internally it was a stinging thorn. However, the grace of the Lord was sufficient to overcome this.

“Every day they did not cease to teach and preach that Jesus was the Christ, whether in the temple or at home” (verse 42).
