빌라도의 법정

요한복음 18:1-11

 

"예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 제자들과 함께 기드론 시내 건너편으로 나가시니 그곳에 동산이 있는데 제자들과 함께 들어가시니라"(1절).

주님께서는 대제사장으로서 중보 기도를 마친 후에 기드론 시내를 지나 겟세마네 동산으로 가셨습니다. 기드론 시내는 예루살렘 동편 골짜기를 흘러 사해로 들어가는데, 지금은 물 없는 계곡으로 감람나무들이 자라고 있습니다.

"그곳에 동산이 있는데" 고대 교부들 중에는 이 동산을 에덴동산과 비교하기도 했습니다. 에덴동산에서는 아담이 타락하였지만 겟세마네 동산에서는 주님께서 승리하셨습니다. 우리는 진실한 승리가 무엇인지를 바로 알고 주님의 승리가 우리의 승리 되기를 소원합니다.

 

1. 가룟 유다도 알던 곳

"그곳은 가끔 예수께서 제자들과 모이시는 곳이므로 예수를 파는 유다도 그곳을 알더라"(2절).

겟세마네 동산은 초행이 아닌 '가끔 모이시는 곳'이라 하신 말씀으로 보아 주님께서 예루살렘으로 올라가실 때면 거기 가서 기도하시고, 제자들을 교훈하신 곳임을 알 수 있습니다. 이로 인해 가룟 유다도 알고 있었습니다.

어느 때 누구를 막론하고 비밀이 노출된다는 것은 위험한 일입니다. 십칠 세의 영국 소년이 우리나라 원자력 연구소의 비밀을 컴퓨터 통신을 통해 외국에 빼돌렸다는 기사를 보고 보안이 그렇게까지 허술할 수가 있을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

믿음의 비밀이 중요합니다. 복음은 공개된 비밀입니다. 마귀에게 약점이 노출되지 않도록 주의하시기 바랍니다.

“집사들도 정중하고 일구이언을 하지 아니하고 술에 인 박히지 아니하고 더러운 이를 탐하지 아니하고 깨끗한 양심에 믿음의 비밀을 가진 자라야 할지니"(딤전3:8-9).

그 비밀이 무엇일까요? 목숨을 다하여 지켜야 할 진리의 보화입니다.

여러분! 과연 이 보화를 발견했습니까? 아직도 믿는다고 하면서 그 보화를 소유하지 못했다면 영적으로는 어린아이일 것입니다. 가룟 유다와 같이 경건의 비밀을 악용하여 진리를 파는 망령된 사람이 아니라 진리를 위해 헌신으로 하나님께 영광 돌리는 일꾼들이 되시기 소원합니다.

 

2. 배신자의 입맞춤

"너희가 거룩하게 입맞춤으로 서로 문안하라"(롬16:16).

"모든 형제도 너희에게 문안하니 너희는 거룩하게 입맞춤으로 서로 문안하라"(고전16:20; 고후13:11).

"거룩하게 입맞춤으로 모든 형제에게 문안하라"(살전5:26).

"너희는 사랑의 입맞춤으로 서로 문안하라"(벧전5:14).

그런데 가룟 유다는 배신의 입을 맞추었습니다.

"친구의 아픈 책망은 충직으로 말미암는 것이나 원수의 잦은 입맞춤은 거짓에서 난 것이니라"(잠27:6).

가룟 유다는 배신의 입맞춤으로 은 삼십에 주님을 팔았습니다. 유다같이 마귀의 올무에 걸리지 않도록 주의해야 해야 합니다.

"유다가 군대와 대제사장들과 바리새인들에게서 얻은 아랫사람들을 데리고 등과 횃불과 무기를 가지고 그리로 오는지라"(3절).

그 당시 군대는 라틴어로 육백 명의 숫자 'cohors'라는 설과 그 삼분의 일에 해당하는 'manipulus' 곧 이백 명이라는 설이 있습니다. 바울을 체포했을 때도 천부장이 말 이백사십 필, 보병 칠백육십 명을 동원한 사실(행 21:31)을 보아 그때에도 상당한 숫자였으리라 짐작할 수 있습니다.

"예수를 파는 자가 그들에게 군호를 짜 이르되 내가 입 맞추는 자가 그이니 그를 잡으라 한지라 곧 예수께 나아와 랍비여 안녕하시옵니까 하고 입을 맞추니"(마26:48-49).

"유다야 네가 입맞춤으로 인자를 파느냐"(눅22:48).

역사가 바뀌는 순간입니다. 이로 인해 주님께서 십자가를 지시고 대속의 제물이 되셨으나 배신자 가룟 유다는 영원한 저주를 받았습니다.

 

3. 메시아의 표적

한 무리들이 검과 몽치를 가지고 와서 예수를 잡으려는 자리에서도 예수께서 메시아임을 보여주는 표적이 있었습니다(눅22:52).

1) 땅에 엎드러진 원수들

이 사건에 관해서는 두 가지 견해가 있습니다.

1) 심리적인 해석으로 장엄하신 인격 앞에 놀라서 엎드러졌다.

2) 말씀의 능력 앞에 엎드러졌다.

칼빈(Calvin)은 그리스도께서 내로라하시는 말씀에 엎드러진 것은 이사야 십일 장 사 절에 나오는 "그 입의 막대기로 세상을 치며 입술의 기운으로 악인을 죽일 것이며" 이 말씀이 이루어진 것이라 했습니다. 이는 왕 중의 왕이신 주님의 위엄 앞에 엎드러진 것입니다.

3) 말고의 귀를 붙여주신 일

"이에 시몬 베드로가 칼을 가졌는데 그것을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐서 오른편 귀를 베어버리니 그 종의 이름은 말고라"(10절).

"이것까지 참으라"(눅22:51),

"칼을 칼집에 꽂으라"(11절),

"네 칼을 도로 칼집에 꽂으라 칼을 가지는 자는 다 칼로 망하느니라"(마26:52)

"그 귀를 만져 낫게 하시더라"(눅22:51).

그 때 말고의 귀가 아닌 팔다리를 잘랐어도 주님께서 붙혀 주셨으리라 생각이 듭니다.

그동안 주님께서 수많은 표적을 나타내신 일에 비하면 이는 작은 일로 생각될 수 있지만 중요한 것은 원수까지도 가리지 않으시고 선을 베푸시는 그리스도의 사랑입니다. 하나님의 능력을 평범하게 받아들이지 마십시오. 주의 능력이 내게 임하실 때 하나님의 역사가 일어난다는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다. 우리는 주님께서 역사하실 때 두려운 마음으로 복종하여 그 뜻을 준행해야 합니다.

하루는 어느 집사님의 전화가 있었습니다. "목사님, 저희 조카가 주일부터 몸이 아파서 치료를 받아도, 약을 써도 낫지를 않습니다. 몸이 불덩이같이 열이 오르고 있습니다. 전화로 기도 좀 해주십시오." 하면서 바꿔주는데 훌쩍훌쩍 울고 있었습니다. 그래서 수화기를 대고 기도를 올린 다음 "이제 하나님께서 고쳐주실 줄 믿으라"하고 끊었습니다. 그런데 그다음 날 교회를 나왔습니다. 몸이 어떠하냐고 물었더니 "이제 나았습니다." 할렐루야!

 

4. 하나도 잃지 않으시는 주님

믿었던 사람이 기대를 저버릴 때 아픈 마음은 더합니다. 감사할 일은 주님께서는 우리에게 실망을 주지 않는다는 것입니다. 십자가의 고난을 두려워하지 마십시오.

"나를 찾거든 이 사람들이 가는 것은 용납하라"(8절).

고난의 십자가는 주님께서 지시고, 우리에게는 대속과 구원의 은총을 내려 주심을 믿으시기 바랍니다.

 

5. 베드로의 용기

베드로는 다른 제자들에 비해 성격이 급했습니다. 그는 모두가 주의 곁을 떠나도 자기만은 주님을 따를 것과 또 죽기까지 변하지 않을 것도 다짐했습니다. 뿐만 아니라 주님께서 "내로라" 하실 때 원수가 엎드러짐을 보고 용기를 발휘한 줄 압니다. 그런데 대제사장의 뜰에서는 그의 연약함이 여지없이 노출되고 말았습니다. 이것이 인간입니다.

"시몬 베드로와 또 다른 제자 한 사람이 예수를 따르니 이 제자는 대제사장과 아는 사람이라 예수와 함께 대제사장의 집 뜰에 들어가고 베드로는 문밖에 서 있는지라 대제사장을 아는 그 다른 제자가 나가서 문 지키는 여자에게 말하여 베드로를 데리고 들어오니 문 지키는 여종이 베드로에게 말하되 너도 이 사람의 제자 중 하나가 아니냐 하니 그가 말하되 나는 아니라"(15-17).

여기에 다른 제자는 요한입니다(요13:23). 그런데 일부 학자들은 "대제사장과 아는 사람이라"는 설과 베드로처럼 질문을 받지 않았다 하여 견해를 달리하는 사람도 있습니다.

"시몬 베드로가 서서 불을 쬐더니 사람들이 묻되 너도 그 제자 중 하나가 아니냐 베드로가 부인하여 이르되 나는 아니라 하니 대제사장의 종 하나는 베드로에게 귀를 잘린 사람의 친척이라 이르되 네가 그 사람과 함께 동산에 있는 것을 내가 보지 아니하였느냐 이에 베드로가 또 부인하니 곧 닭이 울더라"(25-27).

마태복음에는 "그가 저주하며 맹세하여 이르되 나는 그 사람을 알지 못하노라 하니 곧 닭이 울더라"(마26:74) 하였습니다. 무엇을 우리에게 교훈하고 있습니까? 주님의 말씀이 진리임을 증명하는 것입니다.

우리는 복음서에 나오는 그리스도의 행적에서 "이는 성경을 응하게 하려 함이라"는 말씀을 많이 보게 됩니다. 주의 말씀은 일점일획도 변함이 없습니다. 중요한 것은 베드로가 그 사실을 깨닫고 회개한 일입니다. 이로 인해 베드로는 새사람이 되어 후일에 십자가에서 거꾸로 못 박혀 순교하였습니다.

 

6. 빌라도의 법정에 서신 주님

"빌라도가 밖으로 나가서 그들에게 말하되 너희가 무슨 일로 이 사람을 고발하느냐 대답하여 이르되 이 사람이 행악자가 아니었더라면 우리가 당신에게 넘기지 아니하였겠나이다"(29-30).

이렇게 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박기 위해 "행악자"라 하였으나 주님의 생애를 보면 선한 일 외에 누구에게도 악한 일을 한 일이 없었습니다.

"그는 강포를 행하지 아니하였고 그의 입에 거짓이 없었으나 그의 무덤이 악인들과 함께 있었으며 그가 죽은 후에 부자와 함께 있었도다"(사 53:9).

"빌라도가 이르되 너희가 그를 데려다가 너희 법대로 재판하라 유대인들이 이르되 우리에게는 사람을 죽이는 권한이 없나이다"(요18:31).

이는 유대인들이 로마의 법에 따라 합법적으로 예수를 재판하여 십자가에 못 박으려고 한 것이라 하겠습니다. 그러나 빌라도는 그리스도를 정죄할 법이 없었으므로,

"다시 유대인들에게 나가서 이르되 나는 그에게서 아무 죄도 찾지못하였노라"(38절) 했습니다.

주님께서는 죄 없이 죄인이 받을 형벌을 받아 십자가에 못 박혔으나 삼일만에 부활하여 영원한 승리를 우리에게 안겨주었습니다.

우리가 그리스도를 대적하는 원수의 반열이 아닌 그리스도의 대속으로 하나님의 자녀 됨을 감사해야 합니다. 주님을 섬기는 자리에 있는 것을 기뻐하십시오. 이 구원의 진리가 우리들에게 뿐 아니라 온 세상에 퍼지도록 모두가 분발하여 진리의 증인되기를 기원합니다. - 아멘 -

 

 

Pilate's Court

John 18:1-11

 

“When Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, and he went in with them” (verse 1).

After the intercession of the Lord as High Priest, the Lord went through the Kidron Creek to the Garden of Gethsemane. The Kidron brook flows through the valley east of Jerusalem and into the Dead Sea, now a waterless valley where olive trees grow.

“There is a garden” Some of the ancient fathers compared this garden to the Garden of Eden. In the Garden of Eden, Adam fell, but in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Lord triumphed. We know right away what true victory is, and we want the Lord's victory to be ours.

 

1. A place that even Judas Iscariot knew

“It was a place where Jesus often met with his disciples, and even Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place” (verse 2).

Judging from the saying that the Garden of Gethsemane is not a first visit but a 'place where we meet occasionally', we can see that when the Lord went up to Jerusalem, he went there to pray and teach his disciples. Because of this, Judas Iscariot also knew.

It is dangerous to expose secrets to anyone at any time. When I saw an article that a 17-year-old British boy stole the secrets of Korea's nuclear power research center abroad through computer communication, I wondered if security could be so lax.

The secret of faith is important. The gospel is an open secret. Be careful not to expose your weaknesses to the devil.

“The deacons must also be courteous, non-verbal, unstained with wine, not greedy for uncleanness, and possessing the mystery of faith with a clear conscience” (1 Timothy 3:8-9).

What's the secret? It is a treasure of truth that we must protect with our lives.

everyone! Have you ever found this treasure? If you still believe and do not possess that treasure, you are spiritually a child. I hope that you will become workers who glorify God with devotion for the truth, not as vain people who sell the truth by abusing the secret of godliness like Judas Iscariot.

 

2. The traitor's kiss

“Greet one another with a holy kiss” (Romans 16:16).

“All brethren also greet you; greet one another with a holy kiss” (1 Corinthians 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:11).

“Greeting all brothers with a holy kiss” (1 Thessalonians 5:26).

“Greet one another with a kiss of love” (1 Peter 5:14).

But Judas Iscariot kissed the treacherous kiss.

“The painful rebuke of a friend is of faithfulness, but the frequent kiss of the enemy is of deceit” (Proverbs 27:6).

Judas Iscariot sold the Lord for thirty pieces of silver as a kiss of betrayal. We need to be careful not to fall into the devil's snare like Judas.

“And Judas came there with lamps and torches and weapons, with the army and the chief priests and officers from the Pharisees” (verse 3).

At that time, there is a theory that the number of the army at that time was 'cohors' in Latin, and 'manipulus', which is one-third of the number, or two hundred. Judging from the fact that when Paul was arrested, the commander of thousands mobilized two hundred forty horses and seven hundred and sixty infantry men (Acts 21:31), it can be inferred that it was a considerable number even then.

“The one who betrayed Jesus made a command to them, saying, “He is the one I kiss, so seize him.” Immediately he came to Jesus and said, “Hello, Rabbi,” and kissed him” (Matthew 26:48-49).

“Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” (Luke 22:48).

This is the moment when history changes. For this reason, the Lord took up the cross and became a sacrifice for atonement, but the traitor Judas Iscariot was eternally cursed.

 

3. The sign of the Messiah

There was a sign showing that Jesus was the Messiah at the place where a group of people came with swords and clubs to arrest Jesus (Luke 22:52).

1) Enemies who have fallen to the ground

There are two views on this case.

1) I fell on my face in surprise in front of a majestic personality with a psychological interpretation.

2) I fell down before the power of the word.

Calvin said that the fall of Christ at the words of me was the fulfillment of these words in Isaiah eleven chapters verse 4, “They will strike the world with the rod of their mouth, and with the power of their lips they will kill the wicked.” This is to bow down before the majesty of the Lord, the King of kings.

3) Attaching the ears of the horse

“So Simon Peter had a sword, and he drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear” (verse 10).

“Be patient with this” (Luke 22:51),

“Put your sword in its sheath” (verse 11),

“Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matthew 26:52).

“He touched his ear and healed him” (Luke 22:51).

Even if he cut off his limbs instead of his ears, I think the Lord would have saved him.

This may seem like a small thing compared to the many signs that the Lord has shown in the meantime, but the most important thing is the love of Christ, who does good without discrediting even his enemies. Don't take God's power for granted. We must realize that when the power of the Lord comes upon us, the work of God takes place. When the Lord works, we must obey it with fear and do His will.

One day, I got a call from a butler. "Pastor, my nephew has been ill since Sunday, and even though he receives treatment, he does not get better even with medication. His body is heating up like a fireball. Please pray on the phone." While I was changing it, I was sobbing. So I put on the receiver, prayed, and hung up saying, "Now trust that God will heal you." But the next day, I left the church. When I asked him how he was feeling, he said, "I'm fine now." Hallelujah!

 

4. The Lord Who Never Loses One

When the person you trusted disappoints you, your heart aches. The thing to be thankful for is that the Lord does not disappoint us. Do not be afraid of the suffering of the cross.

“If you seek me, let these people go” (verse 8).

Please believe that the Lord bears the cross of suffering and grants us the grace of redemption and salvation.

 

5. Peter's Courage

Peter was quick-tempered compared to his other disciples. He vowed to follow the Lord only for himself, even if everyone left his side, and that he would not change until he died. Not only that, but he knows that he exercised his courage when he saw the enemy fall when the Lord said, “I am.” But in the court of the high priest, his weakness was exposed without any doubt. This is human.

“Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus, and this disciple, an acquaintance of the high priest, entered the courtyard of the high priest’s house with Jesus, and Peter was standing at the door. So he brought Peter in, and the maid at the door said to him, "Aren't you also one of this man's disciples?" And he said, "I am not" (15-17).

Another disciple here is John (John 13:23). However, some scholars disagree with the theory that “he knew the high priest” and that he did not receive questions like Peter did.

"Simon Peter stood and warmed himself, and people asked, "Aren't you one of his disciples?" Peter denied and said, "I am not." One of the high priest's servants was a relative of the man whose ear was cut off by Peter. “Have I not seen that?” Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed” (25-27).

In the Gospel of Matthew, "He cursed and swore, saying, I do not know the man." Immediately a rooster crowed" (Matthew 26:74). What are you teaching us? It is to prove that the word of the Lord is the truth.

In the works of Christ in the Gospels, we often see the words "that the Scriptures may be fulfilled." The word of the Lord does not change even one jot, one jot, one jot. The important thing is that Peter realized this and repented. Because of this, Peter became a new man and was crucified upside down on the cross and martyred.

 

6. The Lord Standing in Pilate's Court

"Pilate went out and said to them, "What are you accusing this man of?" He answered and said, "If this man had not been an evildoer, we would not have handed him over to you" (29-30).

In order to crucify Christ in this way, he was called “an evildoer”, but looking at the life of the Lord, he never did anything bad to anyone except good works.

“He did no violence, and no lie was found in his mouth; but his grave was with the wicked, and after he died he was with his rich” (Isaiah 53:9).

“Pilate said, “Take him and judge him according to your law.” The Jews said, “We have no power to kill a man” (John 18:31).

It is said that the Jews tried to legally judge and crucify Jesus according to Roman law. But Pilate had no law to condemn Christ,

“Again he went out to the Jews and said, “I found no sin in him” (verse 38).

The Lord was nailed to the cross to receive the punishment that sinners deserve without sin, but He rose from the dead on the third day and gave us eternal victory.

We should be thankful that we become God's children through Christ's substitution, not the class of the enemy who opposes Christ. Rejoice in being in a position to serve the Lord. I pray that everyone will strive to become a witness of the truth so that the truth of salvation spreads not only to us but also to the whole world. - Amen -
