서로 발을 씻기라
요13:1-20
유월절은 애굽에서 종살이하던 이스라엘 백성이 그 멍에에서 해방 받은 날을 기념하는 절기로서(출12장), 아빕월 또는 니산월이라고 부르는 정월 15~21일까지 칠일 동안 지켰습니다(출12:15-20; 23:15).
유월절을 지키는 절차는 하나님께 먼저 감사의 기도를 드린 후에 물이 섞인 포도주 한 잔을 마시고 나서 간단한 감사의 기도와 함께 손을 씻은 다음 음식을 차리는 순서로 이어졌는데, 그 음식은 쓴 나물, 무교병, 어린 양의 고기, 대추, 무화과, 마른 포도, 식초 그리고 야채와 나물을 조금 취하여 감사를 드린 후에 그것을 먹고, 두 번째 포도주 잔을 들고 잔치를 주재하는 사람이 일어나서 유월절의 기원과 유래를 설명하고, 시편113편과 114편을 반복하여 읽고 기도를 드린 후에 다시 손을 씻고 그 후에 식사를 하며, 세 번째 포도주 잔을 들고(고전10:16), 마지막 헤어지려고 할 때 또 한 잔을 마시는데, 그때는 시편115, 116, 117, 118편을 반복하여 읽었다고 합니다.
1. 주님의 사랑
"유월절 전에 예수께서 자기가 세상을 떠나 아버지께로 돌아가실 때가 이른 줄 아시고 세상에 있는 자기 사람들을 사랑하시되 끝까지 사랑하시니라"(1절).
여기서 '끝까지'라는 말씀은 두 가지 의미로 생각할 수 있습니다.
1) 최후의 순간까지입니다.
주님은 십자가를 지실 때까지 사랑을 베풀어주셨습니다. 배신자 가룟 유다가 군대와 및 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 보낸 아래 사람들과 함께 검과 몽둥이, 횃불을 들고 왔을 때입니다.
"예수께서 그 당할 일을 다 아시고 나아가 이르시되 너희가 누구를 찾느냐 대답하되 나사렛 예수라 하거늘 이르시되 내가 그니라 하시니라 그를 파는 유다도 그들과 함께 섰더라 예수께서 그들에게 내가 그니라 하실 때에 그들이 물러가서 땅에 엎드러지는지라 이에 다시 누구를 찾느냐고 물으신대 그들이 말하되 나사렛 예수라 하거늘 예수께서 대답하시되 너희에게 내가 그니라 하였으니 나를 찾거든 이 사람들이 가는 것은 용납하라 하시니 이는 아버지께서 내게 주신 자 중에서 하나도 잃지 아니하였사옵나이다 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라"(요18:4-9).
2) 영원토록 변함없는 사랑입니다.
주님의 사랑은 영원합니다.
"내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고 너희에게로 오리라"(요14:18).
"볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라"(마28:20).
이 사랑을 믿으십니까? 지금도 함께 계시고 영원토록 같이 하심을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
2. 마귀의 올무에 빠져든 가룟 유다
"마귀가 벌써 시몬의 아들 가룟 유다의 마음에 예수를 팔려는 생각을 넣었더라"(2절).
무섭고도 불행한 일이라 아니할 수 없습니다. 일전에 어느 집사님으로부터 전화가 왔습니다.
"목사님, 우리 집 큰아들과 초등학교 동기인데, 그 사람이 알콜 중독이 되어서 마침내 가정이 파탄에 이르게 되었습니다. 어떻게 하면 좋을까요? 아이들도 있는데 매일 술만 마신다고 합니다." 듣고 보니 사정이 딱하기 그지없으나 본인이 정신을 차려야 되는데 그러지 못하니 대책을 세우기가 막막했습니다.
"부인은 교회를 나옵니까?"
"아니요, 교회 간다고 하면 남편이 그냥 두지 않아서 못나옵니다"라고 하기에, 그러면 이번 주일 전도팀을 통해 복음을 전하도록 하겠으니 미리 부인에게 부탁하여 남편을 만날 수 있도록 준비하라 하고 전화를 끊었습니다.
불행한 일은 우리들의 주변에 그런 사람이 너무도 많다는 것입니다. 보다 밝은 내일을 위해서 땀 흘려야 마땅한데 불행을 스스로 자초하는 이유가 어디에 있습니까? 마귀의 올무에 빠져있기 때문입니다. 지혜자의 말입니다.
"모든 지킬 만한 것 중에 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 생명의 근원이 이에서 남이니라"(잠4:23).
마귀의 올무를 주의하시기 바랍니다. 가룟 유다를 보십시오. 그는 화인을 맞아 은 삼십에 그리스도를 넘겨주면서 죄의식도 없었습니다.
"저물 때에 예수께서 열두 제자와 함께 앉으셨더니 그들이 먹을 때에 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중의 한 사람이 나를 팔리라 하시니 그들이 몹시 근심하여 각각 여짜오되 주여 나는 아니지요 대답하여 이르시되 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 그가 나를 팔리라 인자는 자기에게 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와 인자를 파는 그 사람에게는 화가 있으리로다 그 사람은 차라리 태어나지 아니하였더라면 제게 좋을 뻔하였느니라 예수를 파는 유다가 대답하여 이르되 랍비여 나는 아니지요 대답하시되 네가 말하였도다"(마26:20-25).
마귀의 화인을 맞으면 제가 하는 일이 무엇인지 알지 못하고 그렇게 하는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 전신갑주로 무장하여 어둠을 물리치고 믿음을 지키는 성도들이 되시기 소원합니다.
3. 모든 것을 아시는 주님
"저녁 먹는 중 예수는 아버지께서 모든 것을 자기 손에 맡기신 것과 또 자기가 하나님께로부터 오셨다가 하나님께로 돌아가실 것을 아시고"(3절).
여기서 두 가지를 생각할 수 있습니다.
1) 모든 것을 자기 손에 맡기신 것
이 말씀은 주의 손에 맡겨진 권세를 의미하기도 하지만(마28:18), 더 중요한 것은 책임을 의식하는 말씀입니다. 권리에는 책임과 의무가 수반된다는 사실을 잊어서는 안 될 것입니다.
러시아를 다녀 온 K양을 만나 그곳이 어떻더냐고 물었더니 "목사님! 꼭 한번 다녀오십시오. 특히 레닌그라드에는 볼 것이 너무 많았습니다. 그런데 얼마나 물가가 오르는지 물건을 사서 돌아서면 값이 또 달라지더라"고 했습니다. 자유의 대가가 이렇게 높은가를 알았다면 사고의식이 달라져야 하고, 생활방법도 변해야 하지요.
우리나라는 어떻습니까? 대기업에서 만들어내는 상품들이 소비자들을 속이고 기한이 지난 식품을 백화점에서 팔고 있는가 하면 세균 오염, 중금속 오염 등 많은 문제가 발생하고 있습니다. 심각한 문제가 아닐 수 없습니다. 우리는 어떤 일을 하든지 천직 의식을 가지고 맡은 임무에 충성하여 하나님께 영광 돌려야 합니다.
2) 하나님께로 오셨다가 하나님께로 돌아갈 것을 아시고
이는 시간이 얼마 남지 아니하였다는 말씀입니다.
만일 내게 수한이 얼마 남지 않았다는 사실을 알게 된다면 무엇을 하고 싶습니까? 생명보험 가입자가 죽은 후에 유족에게 지불되었던 보험금이 이제는 살아있을 때 지불하는 상품으로 새롭게 나왔다고 합니다. 수명을 육 개월 남겨두고 그 보험금을 타게 되면 어떻게 쓸지 궁금합니다. 여기는 인간의 가치 기준에 따라 차이가 있을 줄 압니다. 주님께서는 그 시기를 알고 마지막까지 하나님의 뜻을 이룩하셨습니다.
"저녁 잡수시던 자리에서 일어나 겉옷을 벗고 수건을 가져다가 허리에 두르시고 이에 대야에 물을 떠서 제자들의 발을 씻으시고 그 두르신 수건으로 닦기를 시작하여"(4-5).
"너희는 겸손한 마음으로 피차 발을 씻기는 것이 옳으니라"는 말씀만으로도 족할 것 같은데 주님은 그렇게 하지 않으셨습니다. 도리어 종의 도를 몸소 실천하여 산 교훈을 주셨다는 사실을 우리는 깨달아야 합니다. 생각해 보면 발을 씻어주는 일은 자격증이 있어야 하는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 마음만 있으면 할 수 있는 것입니다. 그러나 그 손길이 누구의 손길이며 어떤 마음에서인가에 따라서는 의미가 달라지는 것입니다. 더욱 중요한 사실은 제자들의 발을 씻겨 주시는 주님의 손길에는 속죄의 은혜가 있다는 것입니다.
우리는 선한 일을 하고 싶어도 다하지 못하고 생을 마치게 된다는 사실을 알고 기회가 최선을 다하는 성도들이 되어야 하겠습니다. "섬김의 도" 누구나 할 수 있는 평범한 일인 줄 아십니까? 주님의 마음이 아니고는 불가능합니다. 우리는 주님께서 행하신 종의 도를 몸소 실천하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 성도들이 되기를 소원합니다.
4. 베드로의 욕심
"시몬 베드로에게 이르시니 베드로가 이르되 주여 주께서 내 발을 씻으시나이까"(6절).
이는 당연한 말입니다. 어떻게 주님께서 제자의 발을 씻을 수 있습니까? 이런 일은 격식에 맞지 않고 예절에도 없는 일입니다. 그러나 주님은 하셨습니다.
"예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내가 하는 것을 네가 지금은 알지 못하나 이 후에는 알리라"(7절).
내가 하는 일을 지금은 네가 깨닫지 못하고 있다는 말씀입니다. 그러면 어느 때에 깨닫게 된다는 말씀일까요? 오순절 성령을 받은 후에야 비로소 섬김의 도를 알게 되었습니다. 진리는 은혜를 받아야만 깨닫게 됩니다.
베드로는 다시 사양합니다. “내 발은 절대로 씻지 못하시리이다...내가 너를 씻어주지 아니하면 네가 나와 상관이 없느니라”(8절).
베드로가 다시 요구합니다.
"주여 내 발 뿐 아니라 손과 머리도 씻어 주옵소서...이미 목욕한 자는 발밖에 씻을 필요가 없느니라 온 몸이 깨끗하니라"(9-10).
이 말씀에 대해 혹자는 유월절 만찬을 먹기 전에 목욕하는 관습을 따랐기 때문이라고 하나 성경에는 유월절 만찬을 먹기 전에 목욕했다는 증거가 없습니다. 물론 만찬을 먹기 전에 손을 씻는 일은 있었습니다마는(마15:2; 막7:3-4). 이 말씀은 내적인 정결에 의미가 있는 것입니다. 주님께서 다시 말씀하십니다.
"너희가 깨끗하나 다는 아니니라 하시니 이는 자기를 팔 자가 누구인지 아심이라 그러므로 다는 깨끗하지 아니하다 하시니라"(10-11).
기억할 것은 이미 목욕한 숫자에 가룟 유다가 들지 못했다는 것입니다. 그것은 주의 진리를 불신한 증거입니다.
"너희는 내가 일러준 말로 이미 깨끗하여졌으니"(요15:3).
오직 주의 은혜와 진리로 정결하게 됨을 믿으시기 바랍니다.
5. 발을 씻으신 섬김의 교훈
"그들의 발을 씻으신 후에 옷을 입으시고 다시 앉아 그들에게 이르시되 내가 너희에게 행한 것을 너희가 아느냐 너희가 나를 선생이라 또는 주라 하니 너희 말이 옳도다 내가 그러하다 내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어 너희 발을 씻었으니 너희도 서로 발을 씻어주는 것이 옳으니라"(12-14).
어떤 사람들은 이 교훈이 종교적 의식을 새롭게 제정한 것으로 생각하기도 합니다. 그러나 이것은 성만찬이나 세례 의식처럼 종교적인 의식으로 말씀하신 것이 아닙니다. 그러므로 초대 교회에서는 이를 시도하지 않았습니다. 이는 오직 겸손과 섬김의 도를 실천에 옮기도록 하신 교훈이기 때문입니다. 이제 우리도 주님께서 제자의 발을 씻김같이, 피차 섬기는 일에 힘써야 하겠습니다. 섬기는 자가 받을 복을 보십시오.
"사람이 나를 섬기려면 나를 따르라 나 있는 곳에 나를 섬기는 자도 거기 있으리니 사람이 나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 그를 귀히 여기시리라"(요12:26).
다시 주님의 교훈이 이어지고 있습니다.
"너희가 나를 선생이라 또는 주라 하니 너희 말이 옳도다 내가 그러하다 내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어 너희 발을 씻었으니 너희도 서로 발을 씻어주는 것이 옳으니라 내가 너희에게 행한 것같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 종이 주인보다 크지 못하고 보냄을 받은 자가 보낸 자보다 크지 못하나니 너희가 이것을 알고 행하면 복이 있으리라"(13-17).

1. The love of the Lord
“Before the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave the world and return to his Father, and he loved his own in the world, loving them to the end” (v. 1).
Here, the word 'to the end' can be thought of in two senses.
1) Until the last moment.
The Lord gave him his love until he was crucified. When Judas Iscariot, the traitor, came with an army and men under him sent by the chief priests and Pharisees, carrying swords, clubs, and torches.
"Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen, went out and said, "Who are you looking for?" He answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." And he said to them, "I am." And Judas, who betrayed him, also stood with them. And he fell on the ground, and he asked who else he was looking for. They said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, I said to you, I am him. When they seek me, let these people go. so that the word, “I buy you,” may be fulfilled” (John 18:4-9).
2) It is eternal and unchanging love.
God's love is eternal.
“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18).
“Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).
Do you believe in this love? Please believe that we are with you now and that we will be together forever.
2. Judas Iscariot, who fell into the snare of the devil
“The devil had already put in the heart of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon the idea to betray Jesus” (verse 2).
It is terrifying and unfortunate. The other day, I got a call from a butler.
“Pastor, my eldest son and I are classmates in elementary school, and he became an alcoholic, and the family eventually collapsed. When I heard it, the situation was quite pitiful, but I had to come to my senses, but I couldn't, so it was difficult to come up with a countermeasure.

The unfortunate thing is that there are so many such people around us. We should sweat for a brighter tomorrow, but why do we bring our own unhappiness? Because they are falling into the trap of the devil. the words of a wise man.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
Beware of the devil's snare. Look at Judas Iscariot. He had no guilt when he gave up Christ for thirty pieces of silver.
“It was evening while Jesus was sitting with the twelve, and while they were eating, he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” They were very grieved and said to each of them, “Lord, I am not.” He who puts in the silver will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written about him, but woe to the man who betrays the Son of Man. It would have been better for him if he had not been born. Judas, who betrayed Jesus, answered and said, Rabbi, I am not. He answered, "You have spoken" (Matthew 26:20-25).
If you are struck with the devil's fire, you do it without knowing what you are doing. Therefore, we hope that we will become saints who fight the darkness and keep the faith by being armed with the full armor of God.
3. The All-Knowing Lord
“At supper Jesus knew that his Father had put all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and would return to God” (v. 3).
I can think of two things here.
1) Entrusting everything into his own hands
This word also refers to the authority entrusted to the Lord's hands (Matthew 28:18), but more importantly, it is a word that is conscious of responsibility. We must not forget that rights entail responsibilities and obligations.

It can't be a serious problem. Whatever we do, we must give glory to God by being faithful to our duties with a sense of vocation.
2) Knowing that you will return to God after coming to God
This means that time is running out.
What would you do if you knew that you were nearing the end of your life? It is said that the insurance benefits paid to the bereaved family after the death of the life insurance policyholder are now a new product to be paid while they are alive. I wonder how it will be used if I get the insurance money with six months left in my life. I know that there are differences according to the standards of human values. The Lord knew the time and fulfilled God's will to the end.
“I got up from the dinner table, took off my coat, took a towel, put it around my waist, poured water into a basin, washed the disciples’ feet, and began wiping with the towel that was wrapped around” (4-5).
Just saying, "It is lawful for you to wash one another's feet in humility of mind" would be sufficient, but the Lord did not do that. Rather, we must realize that he has given us living lessons by personally practicing the way of servants. Come to think of it, you don't have to be licensed to wash your feet. It is something you can do if you put your mind to it. However, the meaning is different depending on whose hand it is and what kind of heart it is. More importantly, there is the grace of atonement in the Lord's hand washing the disciples' feet.
We need to become saints who do our best when we have the opportunity, knowing that even if we want to do good deeds, we cannot do it and end our lives. Do you know that "The Way of Serving" is an ordinary job that anyone can do? It is impossible without the heart of the Lord. We want to become saints who glorify God by practicing the Lord's way of servanthood.
4. Peter's Greed
“He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (verse 6).
This is natural. How can the Lord wash the disciples' feet? This is not formal and unethical. But the Lord did.
“Jesus answered and said to them, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but after this you will know” (verse 7).
What I'm saying is that you don't understand what I'm doing now. So, when will you realize it? It was only after receiving the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost that I knew the way of serving. The truth can only be realized through grace.
Peter declines again. “You will never wash my feet...unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (v. 8).
Peter asks again.
"Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head... Those who have already bathed need only wash their feet; their whole body is clean" (9-10).
Some say this is because they followed the custom of bathing before eating the Passover Supper, but there is no evidence in the Bible that they bathed before eating the Passover Supper. Of course, there were occasions to wash hands before eating dinner (Matthew 15:2; Mark 7:3-4). These words have meaning in inner purity. The Lord speaks again.
"You are clean, but not all of them." Because he knew who would betray him. Therefore, he said, "Not all are clean" (10-11).
Remember, Judas Iscariot was not included in the number of baths already taken. It is evidence of disbelief in the truth of the Lord.
“You are already cleansed by the word I spoke to you” (John 15:3).
Please believe that you will be purified only by the grace and truth of the Lord.
5. The Lesson of Serving by Washing Feet
"After he washed their feet, he put on his clothes, and sat down again, and said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? It is right that you also wash one another's feet" (12-14).
Some people even consider this precept to be a re-establishment of religious ceremonies. However, this was not spoken of as a religious ceremony, such as the Lord's Supper or the rite of baptism. Therefore, the early church did not try this. This is because this is the only lesson that allowed us to put into practice the way of humility and service. now We should do our best to serve one another, just as the Lord washes the feet of his disciples. See the blessings that those who serve will receive.
“If anyone wants to serve me, follow me; where I am, there will also be those who serve me; and if a man serves me, my Father will honor him” (John 12:26).
Again, the instruction of the Lord continues.
"You are right when you say that I am a teacher or a lord, you are right. I am so I was a lord and a teacher and washed your feet, so you also ought to wash one another's feet. “Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him.

We believe that when we are obedient, we will enjoy precious blessings. May we all enjoy honor and glory together in the presence of the Lord. - Amen -
