니고데모의 변호

요7:45-52

 

이집트의 영자 신문 이집션 가제트지 천구백구십사 년 칠월 십일자 보도에 "신의 죽음"이라는 특별 기고입니다.

"통일이 되기 전에는 결코 죽지 않으리라 하던 김일성이 통일이 되기 전에 지구상의 다른 피조물과 마찬가지로 저세상으로 갔다…그의 갑작스런 죽음이 북한의 무신론자들에게 영존하는 초월적 존재에 대한 경각심과 경외심을 일깨워 주는 계기가 되기 바란다."

지구상에서 유일하게 사회주의와 김일성 주체사상을 고집하는 북한이 그의 아들 김정일의 시대로 바뀌었습니다. 신이라면 죽을 수가 없고 죽어서도 안 되지요. 이집트의 피라밋 안에는 바로의 미이라가 잠들어 있으나 그리스도를 장사지낸 무덤은 비어 있다는 사실을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

중국을 다녀온 어느 목사의 이야기인데 "중국에서 초대 교회의 모습을 보고 왔다"고 했습니다. 성도들의 신앙이 얼마나 뜨거운지 찬양하는 시간이 보통 한 시간이었고, 교회마다 사람들이 모여들어서 성찬 예식을 거행할 때면 세례받는 숫자가 보통 천오백 명을 넘는다고 합니다. 인구 오천만이 넘는 일개 성에 목사 열 사람이 안 된다고 하니 얼마나 영혼이 갈급할까 짐작하고도 남음이 있을 줄 압니다. 이는 혹한 설이 물러가면서 만물들이 생기를 되찾아 소생하는 모습이라 할 수 있습니다.

우리나라도 왜정 시대와 6·25의 참상을 겪을 때는 교회마다 회개의 눈물이 있었고, 은혜의 역사가 불같이 일어났으나 오늘은 어떻습니까? 타성에 젖어 들어 라오디게아 교회같이 책망 받지 않을까 두려운 마음입니다. 기도하는 일, 전도하는 일이 마비되지 않도록 주의해야 합니다.

"너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다"(욜2:13). 선지자 요엘의 말씀대로 우리는 영적인 변화를 받아 성령의 열매를 맺어야 하겠습니다.

 

1. 그리스도를 죽이려는 유대인들

"사람이 하나님의 뜻을 행하려 하면 이 교훈이 하나님께로부터 왔는지 내가 스스로 말함인지 알리라"(17절).

유대인들은 그리스도가 배운 일이 없으면서도 그의 교훈은 서기관들과 바리새인들과 다르다는 것을 알았으나 메시아로 믿지 않았던 것은 교만하여 예수님을 멸시했기 때문입니다(요8:46). 위선과 교만은 무서운 죄가 됩니다.

"당신은 귀신이 들렸도다 누가 당신을 죽이려 하나이까"(20절).

교권자들이 예수를 죽이려고 모의하는 것을 무리 들이 알지 못하고 있었기 때문에 오히려 그들은 예수의 정신 상태를 의심하려고 했습니다. 그러나 주님께서는 가룟 유다의 마음을 알고 계셨던 것같이 그들이 오래지 않아 "십자가에 못 박게 하소서"라고 외칠 것도 알고 있었습니다. 사실 유대인들은 선택받은 아브라함의 후손들입니다. 그런데 그들이 그리스도에게서 표적을 보지 못해 못 믿었을까요? 오히려 그들은 나사로를 무덤에서 살려내는 것을 보고 나사로까지 죽이려고 하였습니다(요12:10).

"모세의 율법을 범하지 아니하려고 사람이 안식일에도 할례를 받는 일이 있거든 내가 안식일에 사람의 전신을 건전하게 한 것으로 너희가 내게 노여워하느냐"(23절).

 

2. 예수의 출신 배경

"그러나 우리는 이 사람이 어디서 왔는지 아노라 그리스도께서 오실 때에는 어디서 오시는지 아는 자가 없으리라 하는지라"(27절).

그러면서도 그들은 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 모순된 말을 계속해서 하고 있습니다.

"성경에 이르기를 그리스도는 다윗의 씨로 또 다윗이 살던 마을 베들레헴에서 나오리라 하지 아니하였느냐"(42절).

이는 예수가 메시아일 수 없다는 사실을 증명하기 위해 하는 말이지만 그들은 선지자의 예언이 성취된 사실을 알지 못하고 있었습니다. 유대인의 왕으로 오식 주님께서는 선지자의 예언대로 유대 땅 베들레헴에서 탄생하셨고 이는 헤롯 앞에서 그들이 증거한 사실입니다.

“왕이 모든 대제사장과 백성의 서기관들을 모아 그리스도가 어디서 나겠느냐 물으니 이르되 유대 베들레헴이오니 이는 선지자로 이렇게 기록된바 또 유대 땅 베들레헴아 너는 유대 고을 중에서 가장 작지 아니하도다 네게서 한 다스리는 자가 나와서 내 백성 이스라엘의 목자가 되리라 하였음이니이다”(마2:4-6).

그런데 그들이 지금 무슨 말을 하는지 보십시오.

"우리는 이 사람이 어디서 왔는지 아노라 그리스도께서 오실 때에는 어디서 오시는지 아는 자가 없으리라"(27절).

주님께서 탄생하셨을 때는 하늘의 징조와 천사들의 계시를 받은 자 외에는 알지 못한 것이 사실입니다. 부활하신 주님께서도 유대인들에게 보이지 않으셨는데 그 이유가 있습니다.

“나의 계명을 지키는 자라야 나를 사랑하는 자니 나를 사랑하는 자는 내 아버지께 사랑을 받을 것이요 나도 그를 사랑하여 그에게 나를 나타내리라”(요14:21) 하셨습니다.

"우리는 이 사람이 어디서 왔는지 아노라"(27절).

이것은 예수를 메시아로 알았다는 것이 아니라 나사렛 목수의 아들 예수로 알고 있다는 것입니다.

“자기가 하늘에서 내려온 떡이라 하시므로 유대인들이 예수에 대하여 수군거려 이르되 이는 요셉의 아들 예수가 아니냐 그 부모를 우리가 아는데 자기가 지금 어찌하여 하늘에서 내려왔다 하느냐”(요6:41-42).

기독교는 계시의 종교로서 이 진리는 공개된 비밀입니다.

"예수께서 성전에서 가르치시며 외쳐 이르시되 너희가 나를 알고 내가 어디서 온 것도 알거니와 내가 스스로 온 것이 아니니라 나를 보내신 이는 참되시니 너희는 그를 알지 못하나 나는 아노니 이는 내가 그에게서 났고 그가 나를 보내셨음이라"(28-29).

이 말씀은 유대인들이 아는 것과 주님께서 아시는 것의 근본적인 차이입니다. 유대인들은 인간 예수 그 이상을 알지 못했으나 그리스도는 하나님을 알고 또 그로 말미암아 보내심을 받았다고 하셨습니다.

곧 "아버지께서 내 안에 계시고 내가 아버지 안에 있음을"(요10:38) 말씀하신 것입니다.

 

3. 주님 가시는 곳에 이르지 못할 자들

그들은 한마디로 불행한 자들입니다.

"너희가 나를 찾아도 만나지 못할 터이요 나 있는 곳에 오지도 못하리라 하시니 이에 유대인들이 서로 묻되 이 사람이 어디로 가기에 우리가 그를 만나지 못하리요 헬라인 중에 흩어져 사는 자들에게로 가서 헬라인을 가르칠 터인가 나를 찾아도 만나지 못할 터이요 나 있는 곳에 오지도 못하리라 한 이 말이 무슨 말이냐"(34-36).

복음을 전할 때 안타까운 것은 말이 통하지 않는다는 것입니다. 방언으로 복음을 전하는 것이 아닌데 알아듣지 못하는 이유가 어디 있을까요? 육신에 속해 있기 때문입니다. 이성 없는 짐승에게 말이 이해되지 않는 것같이, 육신에 속한 사람은 영에 속한 진리를 깨닫지 못하는 것입니다. 그러므로 땅에 속한 사람들이 가는 길과 하늘에 속한 사람들의 가는 길이 다른 것입니다.

여러분! 영생의 진리를 믿으십니까? 이 진리 안에서 영생의 기쁨을 누리시기 소원합니다.

 

4. 니고데모의 변호

"아랫사람들이 대제사장들과 바리새인들에게로 오니 그들이 묻되 어찌하여 잡아오지 아니하였느냐 아랫사람들이 대답하되 그 사람이 말하는 것처럼 말한 사람은 이때까지 없었나이다 하니 바리새인들이 대답하되 너희도 미혹되었느냐 당국자들이나 바리새인 중에 그를 믿는 자가 있느냐 율법을 알지 못하는 이 무리는 저주를 받은 자로다"(45-49).

대제사장들과 바리새인들에 비해 아래 사람들은 말씀을 듣고 예수를 달리 보았으나 아래 사람들의 말을 듣고 설득될 자가 아니지요. 유대인들의 완고함은 이천 년이 지난 오늘까지도 변함이 없는 것 같습니다.

지금 유대인 중에는 1% 정도 기독교로 개종하였는데 그들은 유대인들에게서 배교자로 낙인 찍혀 박해를 당한다고 합니다. 주님 당시에도 모든 불이익을 감수하고 등장한 인물이 있었는데 그가 바로 주님을 밤에 찾아왔던 니고데모입니다.

"그중에 한 사람 곧 전에 예수께 왔던 니고데모가 그들에게 말하되 우리 율법은 사람의 말을 듣고 그 행한 것을 알기 전에 심판하느냐"(50-51).

물론 니고데모의 말이 그들을 설득하기는 불가능하였으나 그의 신앙은 변함이 없었습니다. 그 후 그는 유대인들이 십자가에 못 박아 죽인 주님을 위해 몰약과 침향을 가지고 와서 유대인의 장례법대로 장례식을 했습니다.

"일찍이 예수께 밤에 찾아왔던 니고데모도 몰약과 침향섞은 것을 백 리트라쯤 가지고 온지라 이에 예수의 시체를 가져다가 유대인의 장례법대로 그 향품과 함께 세마포로 쌌더라"(요19:39-40).

이는 주님을 위해서 출교뿐 아니라 순교도 각오한 믿음이었습니다. 감사드릴 일은 주님을 위하여 바친 정성은 헛되지 않다는 것입니다.

우리는 니고데모와 같이 순교를 각오하고 진리를 변호하며 또 증언하는 일에 앞장서는 성도들이 되시기를 기원합니다. - 아멘 -

 

Nicodemus' defense

John 7:45-52

It is said that there are fewer than ten pastors in a castle with a population of over 50 million, so there is more than enough to estimate how thirsty the soul is. This can be said to be the appearance of all things being brought back to life as the cold winter season recedes.

In Korea too, during the Japanese era and the devastation of June 25, there were tears of repentance in each church, and the work of grace took place like a fire, but what about today? I am afraid that I will fall into inertia and be rebuked like the church in Laodicea. We must be careful not to paralyze our prayers and evangelism.

“Tear your heart, not your clothes, and return to the LORD your God” (Joel 2:13). As the prophet Joel said, we must receive spiritual transformation and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

 

1. Jews Trying to Kill Christ

“If any man will do the will of God, he will know whether this doctrine is from God or whether I speak of my own accord” (verse 17).

Although the Jews knew that Christ had not been taught and that his teachings were different from those of the scribes and Pharisees, they did not believe in the Messiah because they were proud and despised Jesus (John 8:46). Hypocrisy and pride are terrible sins.

“You have a demon; who wants to kill you?” (verse 20).

Because the crowds were unaware that the clergy were plotting to kill Jesus, they tried to question Jesus' mental state. But as He knew the heart of Judas Iscariot, He knew that before long they would cry out, "Crucify him." In fact, the Jews are the chosen descendants of Abraham. But could they not believe because they did not see a sign in Christ? Rather, when they saw that Lazarus was raised from the tomb, they tried to kill him as well (John 12:10).

“If a man is circumcised on the sabbath so that he may not break the law of Moses, are you angry with me because I made a man whole on the sabbath?” (verse 23).

 

2. Jesus' background

“But we know where this man came from, for when the Christ comes, no one knows where he comes from” (v. 27).

Still, they keep saying contradictory things that don't make sense.

“Did not the scriptures say, ‘The Christ is the seed of David, and will come out of Bethlehem, the town where David lived’?” (verse 42).

This is to prove that Jesus could not be the Messiah, but they did not know that the prophet's prophecy had been fulfilled. As the King of the Jews, the Lord was born in Bethlehem, the land of Judea, according to the prophecy of the prophet, and this is the fact they testified before Herod.

“The king gathered all the chief priests and the scribes of the people together and asked him where the Christ was born, and he said, “Bethlehem, Judea, for this is written by the prophet, Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, you are not the least among the towns of Judea. I will become a shepherd for you” (Matthew 2:4-6).

But look what they are saying now.

“We know where this man is from, and when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is coming from” (verse 27).

It is true that when the Lord was born, it was not known except to those who had received signs from heaven and revelations from angels. The resurrected Lord was also invisible to the Jews, for a reason.

“He who keeps my commandments is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him” (John 14:21).

“We know where this man came from” (verse 27).

This does not mean that they knew Jesus as the Messiah, but that they knew Jesus as the son of the carpenter of Nazareth.

“Because he said that he is the bread that came down from heaven, the Jews murmured about him, saying, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph?

Christianity is a religion of revelation, and this truth is an open secret.

“Jesus was teaching in the temple, and he cried out, saying, ‘You know me and you know where I come from, but I did not come of myself; he who sent me is true. You do not know him, but I know that I am of him and he sent me.” 28-29).

This is the fundAmental difference between what the Jews know and what the Lord knows. The Jews knew nothing more than the man Jesus, but Christ knew God and was sent by him.

That is, He said, “The Father is in me, and I am in the Father” (John 10:38).

 

3. Those who will not reach the place where the Lord is going

They are, in a word, unfortunate.

“You will seek me, and you will not find me, nor will you come where I am.” Then the Jews asked one another, “Where is this man going, so that we cannot find him? What do you mean by this saying that you will seek me, but you will not find me, nor will you come to where I am?” (34-36).

The sad thing about preaching the gospel is that words don't work. If the gospel is not preached in tongues, what is the reason for not understanding it? Because it belongs to the body. Just as words cannot be understood by an irrational beast, so people who are carnal do not understand the truth of the spirit. Therefore, the path of earthly people is different from the path of heavenly people.

everyone! Do you believe in the truth of eternal life? I hope you enjoy the joy of eternal life in this truth.

 

4. Nicodemus' defense

"When the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, they asked, "Why did you not bring him?" The servants answered, "No one has ever spoken as the man said." The Pharisees answered, "Are you also deceived? Does anyone believe in him? Cursed are this multitude, who do not know the law” (45-49).

Compared to the chief priests and Pharisees, the people below listen to the word and see Jesus differently, but they are not the ones to be persuaded by hearing the words of the people below. The stubbornness of the Jews does not seem to have changed even today, two thousand years later.

Today, about 1% of Jews have converted to Christianity, and it is said that they are branded as apostates by the Jews and persecuted. Even at the time of the Lord, there was a person who appeared at all disadvantages, and that person was Nicodemus, who came to the Lord at night.

“One of them, Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus before, said to them, “Does our law judge a man before it hears a man and knows what he has done?” (50-51).

Of course, Nicodemus' words were impossible to persuade them, but his faith did not change. After that, he brought myrrh and aloes for the Lord, whom the Jews had crucified, and held a funeral according to the Jewish burial law.

“Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus earlier by night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litres, and took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths along with the spices according to the Jewish burial law” (John 19:39-40). ).

This was a faith that was prepared not only for excommunication but also for martyrdom for the Lord. The thing to be thankful for is that the devotion you gave to the Lord was not in vain.

Like Nicodemus, we pray that we will become saints who are prepared for martyrdom and take the lead in defending and witnessing the truth. - Amen -
